Comedy Meets Royalty: Stephen Mangan Explains Why He Won’t Bow to King Charles
Actor and comedian Stephen Mangan has publicly stated that he would neither bow to King Charles nor accept any royal honours.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Mangan, known for his roles in “The Split” and “Green Wing,” attributed his stance to his Irish republican heritage, saying, “I wouldn’t do any of that. I’m from an Irish republican family. I’m not bowing down in front of King Charles.”
When questioned about whether he had previously declined an honour, Mangan declined to provide specifics, stating, “I wouldn’t be at liberty to say.”
Mangan’s position aligns with that of other public figures who have declined royal honours. Musician David Bowie reportedly refused both a CBE in 2000 and a knighthood in 2003, expressing that he had no intention of accepting such accolades.
Similarly, director Danny Boyle turned down a knighthood after orchestrating the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, feeling it would be inappropriate to accept individual recognition for a collaborative effort.
These statements come as King Charles prepares to announce the New Year Honours list, which traditionally acknowledges individuals for their contributions to society.
Mangan’s remarks highlight ongoing discussions about the relevance and personal significance of such honours in contemporary society.
