NERC Reveals $5.7M Electricity Debt: Togo, Benin, Niger Analysis

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that international customers from Togo, Benin, and Niger Republic owe Nigeria $5.7 million for electricity supplied during the third quarter of 2024.

These international customers include:

  • Paras-SBEE and Transcorp-SBEE: Both from Benin Republic.
  • Mainstream-NIGELEC: From Niger Republic.
  • Odukpani-CEET: From Togo.

In the previous quarter (Q2 2024), NERC reported that international bilateral electricity customers in Benin Republic and Togo owed Nigeria $5.79 million for energy consumed.

The consistent accumulation of unpaid electricity bills by these neighboring countries poses a significant financial challenge to Nigeria’s power sector.

It underscores the need for enhanced payment mechanisms and stricter enforcement of bilateral agreements to ensure the sustainability of cross-border electricity supply.
