Exploring NCAA Sanctions: The Rise in Flight Cancellations and Missing Luggage Complaints
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has initiated enforcement actions against five airlines—two international and three domestic—for multiple violations of consumer protection regulations.
The infractions include:
- Delayed Refunds: Failure to process passenger refunds within the stipulated 14-day period for online ticket purchases or provide immediate cash refunds for tickets bought with cash.
- Non-Responsiveness: Ignoring directives issued by the NCAA.
- Baggage Issues: Incidents of missing, mishandled, or short-landed luggage.
- Flight Disruptions: Persistent delays and cancellations not attributed to force majeure, such as weather conditions.
While the NCAA has not publicly disclosed the names of the sanctioned airlines, reports suggest that the affected carriers include Ethiopian Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Arik Air, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace.
This enforcement action follows a surge in passenger complaints during the holiday season, prompting the NCAA to reiterate its commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.
The NCAA has also summoned the Chief Executive Officers of all airlines for a meeting to address these issues and improve service delivery within the industry.
