Christmas Day Riots Lead to Massive Mozambican Jailbreak
On December 25, 2024, a significant prison riot occurred at Maputo Central Prison in Mozambique’s capital, leading to the escape of approximately 1,500 inmates. The unrest resulted in at least 33 deaths and 15 injuries among prisoners.
The riot coincided with nationwide civil unrest following the Constitutional Council’s confirmation of the ruling Frelimo party’s victory in the disputed October 9 elections. Protests erupted, with opposition groups alleging electoral fraud. During the chaos, inmates overpowered guards, seized weapons, and facilitated the mass escape.
Mozambique’s police chief, Bernardino Rafael, reported that security forces have recaptured about 150 of the escaped prisoners. He urged the remaining fugitives to surrender and called on the public to assist in their apprehension.
The prison break has intensified concerns about security and stability in Mozambique amid the ongoing political crisis.
International observers have noted significant irregularities in the electoral process, and the subsequent violence has led to numerous casualties and widespread property damage.
Authorities are conducting investigations into the prison riot and the broader civil unrest, aiming to restore order and address the underlying political tensions contributing to the instability.
