Israeli Strikes in Yemen: Close Call for WHO Chief and UN Team
On December 26, 2024, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and a UN delegation narrowly escaped injury when Israeli airstrikes targeted Sanaa International Airport in Yemen.
The attacks, which resulted in at least six fatalities, occurred as Dr. Tedros and his team were preparing to depart.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted these strikes in retaliation for missile and drone attacks launched by Houthi rebels against Israeli territory. The IDF targeted key Houthi infrastructure, including the airport, power plants, and ports.
The UN delegation’s close call underscores the escalating risks to humanitarian operations in the region. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks, emphasizing the dangers posed to aid workers and the critical need for safe access to deliver humanitarian assistance.
In response to the attack, the UN team was temporarily grounded due to damage to the airport’s infrastructure, including the control tower. Repairs are underway to facilitate the safe departure of the delegation.
This incident highlights the complex and volatile nature of the conflict in Yemen, where multiple actors are involved, and underscores the challenges faced by international organizations in delivering aid and maintaining operations in conflict zones.
