Edo LG Political Shake-up: Chairman and Vice Chairman Removed from Office
he legislative arm of Egor Local Government Council in Edo State has impeached its Chairman, Eghe Ogbemudia, and Vice Chairman, Frank Osawe, over allegations of gross misconduct.
The impeachment, which took place on December 27, 2024, was based on four charges: abuse of office, financial misappropriation, unlawful withholding of statutory allowances for council members, and budget padding.
The motion for impeachment was moved by Hon. Nosakhare Isiegbuwa and seconded by Hon. Stella Ogida Osagioduwa, with four legislators signing in support
In addition to the impeachment, the council’s legislative arm suspended its principal officers, including Majority Leader Hon. Bosede Omokaro, Hon. Iwinosa Enabulele, and Chief Whip Hon. Elliot Inneh Enni, citing their failure to collaborate effectively with the local government chairman, delays in councillors’ salaries, and neglect of oversight responsibilities.
Following the impeachment, Hon. Kelvin Eguakun was elected as the new Leader of the legislative arm and has been sworn in as the acting Chairman of the council.
It’s noteworthy that earlier in December 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly had suspended all local government chairmen and their deputies over allegations of insubordination and gross misconduct.
However, a High Court in Benin reversed this suspension, ordering the reinstatement of the officials pending further proceedings.
Eghe Ogbemudia, daughter of former governor Brig-Gen. Samuel Ogbemudia, had previously survived an impeachment attempt earlier in the year.
