Speed Darlington’s Lawyer Stan Alieke Explains Limits on Police Powers Over Drug Possession
Stan Alieke, the legal representative of Nigerian musician Speed Darlington, has asserted that the Nigeria Police Force lacks the authority to arrest, detain, or prosecute individuals found in possession of Indian hemp or other hard drugs. He emphasized that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
This statement follows Speed Darlington’s arrest on November 27, 2024, on allegations of cyberstalking Grammy Award winner Burna Boy. During the arrest, it was reported that Indian hemp was found in his possession.
Alieke’s remarks highlight the delineation of responsibilities between law enforcement agencies in Nigeria, with the NDLEA designated to handle drug-related offenses. This clarification underscores the legal framework governing the prosecution of drug-related crimes in the country.
