Ogun Police Scandal: Officers Caught Extorting Money in Missing Girl Investigation
Several officers from the Ogun State Police Command have been arrested for allegedly demanding bribes from the family of a missing seven-year-old girl before initiating an investigation.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the arrests on December 28, 2024, stating that the officers are currently in detention pending disciplinary action.
The incident reportedly occurred in Ota, Ogun State, where the young girl was abducted by a regular customer of her mother’s point-of-sale business.
When the family approached the local police station to report the kidnapping, officers allegedly demanded ₦10,000 to file the report and an additional ₦30,000 to track the suspect’s phone number.
ACP Adejobi condemned the officers’ actions as “inhuman, apathetic, and unprofessional,” emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated within the Nigeria Police Force.
He reassured the public that the Ogun State Police Command is actively working on the case and expressed confidence that the missing girl would be found soon. Adejobi also urged the victim’s family to cooperate fully with the police during the investigation.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about corruption and misconduct within law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
The swift arrest of the implicated officers demonstrates the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to addressing such issues and upholding professional standards. Members of the public are encouraged to report any instances of police misconduct to higher authorities to ensure accountability and justice.
