N14.3bn Boost for Digital Transformation: Inside Nigeria’s 20 MDA Computer Overhaul
In the 2025 national budget proposals, 20 Nigerian Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have collectively allocated approximately ₦14.3 billion for the purchase of computers.
The Ministry of Education has the largest allocation for this purpose, with ₦3.88 billion earmarked for computer purchases.
Other significant allocations include the National Cybercrime Coordination Centre with ₦2.735 billion, the former Ministry of Sports Development with ₦1.1 billion, and the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development with over ₦260 million designated for similar expenditures.
This recurring expenditure has drawn criticism from civil society groups and analysts, who describe it as unnecessary and excessive.
They argue that such routine allocations for items like computers, which do not require annual replacement, represent a waste of public resources. Calls have been made for the National Assembly to scrutinize these budget proposals more rigorously to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Notably, similar allocations were present in the 2024 budget, where the item “Purchase of Computers” appeared 144 times.
This pattern has led to concerns about the efficiency and necessity of these expenditures, especially given the current economic challenges facing the country.
In response to these concerns, some lawmakers have advocated for a shift in budget planning to eliminate repetitive allocations for items such as computers, vehicles, and furniture, emphasizing the need for more prudent and transparent fiscal management.
