Abuja Hotel Shooting: Cache of Weapons Uncovered in Suspect’s Home
On December 26, 2024, at Najob Guest House in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, a heated argument between 33-year-old Obinna Nwigwe and his friend, 29-year-old Andrew Philemon, escalated, resulting in Nwigwe shooting Philemon with a pump-action rifle. Philemon sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital.
Following the incident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command conducted a search of Nwigwe’s residence, uncovering a significant cache of weapons, including:
- Five dane guns
- One English-made single-barrel firearm
- An AK-47 magazine containing 29 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition
- Four live cartridges
- Seventeen spent cartridges
- A bow with arrows
- Various knives
- A sword stick
- A toy gun
- A taser
- A bulletproof jacket
- Multiple sets of police uniforms and boots
Nwigwe claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense following the argument. He is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The discovery of such an extensive arsenal raises concerns about illegal arms possession and the potential for misuse. The FCT Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating illegal firearms and ensuring the safety of residents.
