Breaking News: Cargo Ship Disaster Off Philippines’ Coast, Casualties Reported
A Philippine-flagged cargo ship, the Jerlyn Kathness, sank in the San Bernardino Strait near Samar Island on December 30, 2024, resulting in one crew member’s death and leaving two others missing.
The vessel was transporting 24 tonnes of cement from Cebu to Samar when it encountered massive waves. Eleven of the 15 crew members were rescued, while the remaining three are unaccounted for.
The Philippine Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue operations to locate the missing crew members. The incident highlights the dangers faced by maritime workers in the region.
In July 2024, a similar incident occurred when an oil tanker sank in rough seas off the Philippines, resulting in the loss of a crew member.
