Plymouth Argyle Dismisses Wayne Rooney as Manager Amid Winless Woes
Wayne Rooney has been dismissed as manager of Plymouth Argyle after a seven-month tenure marked by a nine-match winless streak. Appointed in May 2024 on a three-year contract, Rooney’s departure comes with the team at the bottom of the Championship, having conceded a record 51 goals in 23 games.
During his time at Plymouth, the team secured only four league victories, suffering 13 defeats. Notable heavy losses included matches against Coventry, Oxford, Bristol City, Norwich, and Cardiff, leaving them four points adrift of safety.
Rooney’s exit is accompanied by assistant Mike Phelan and coach Simon Ireland. In the interim, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and captain Joe Edwards will oversee team affairs. In his departure statement, Rooney expressed gratitude to the club’s board, staff, players, and fans.
This marks another setback in Rooney’s managerial career, following previous stints at Derby County and DC United. Plymouth Argyle now faces the challenge of appointing a new manager to steer the club away from relegation as the season progresses.
