Ekiti Tragedy: Accidental Discharge Claims Life During Policeman’s Celebration
On January 2, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria, when a police officer’s firearm accidentally discharged, resulting in the death of a woman.
The officer, who had recently received news of a colleague’s promotion, was reportedly in a celebratory mood when the discharge occurred.
The woman, identified as Ifeoluwa Adekalu, was struck by the bullet while standing in front of a salon opposite the Okela Police Station. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the incident and stated that the officer has been disarmed and detained for interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge and to ensure accountability.
