NICU Babies’ Unexplained Fractures Lead to Nurse’s Arrest: A Deep Dive
A nurse in Virginia has been arrested following a series of disturbing incidents involving newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond. Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, faces charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse after several infants were found with unexplained injuries and bone fractures.
The investigation began after four babies sustained injuries, including fractures, in the summer of 2023. Despite internal investigations and increased security measures, three additional cases emerged in November and December 2024. This led the hospital to temporarily cease admitting new patients to the NICU on December 24, 2024.
Strotman was arrested on January 3, 2025, after being identified as a suspect in the November incidents. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and re-examining previous cases to determine if she is connected to other injuries. The hospital has expressed shock and sadness over the developments and is cooperating fully with the investigation.
One affected family, Dominique and Tori Hackey, shared their experience after their son Noah suffered a fractured leg in the NICU in 2023. They were devastated to learn that a hospital employee was responsible for the injury. The hospital has since implemented enhanced security measures, including additional cameras and staff training, to prevent further incidents.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The hospital remains committed to providing care and support to affected families and staff during this challenging time.
