Jigawa Tragedy: Bride’s Conspiracy with Ex Revealed in Husband’s Poisoning
In a tragic incident in Jigawa State, Nigeria, a 15-year-old bride, identified as Zahra’u, has been arrested for allegedly conspiring with her ex-lover to poison her husband, Kamisu Haruna, 29, just two days after their wedding.
The incident occurred in the Albasu village of Jahun Local Government Area. According to police reports, Zahra’u and her ex-lover, 22-year-old Aliyu Muhammad, conspired to poison Haruna’s food.
The meal, which was brought to Haruna’s tailoring shop by Zahra’u’s friends, was shared among Haruna and his two friends, Muhammad Alfah and Isyaku Adamu. Shortly after consuming the food, all three men developed severe stomach pains and were rushed to the hospital. Tragically, Muhammad Alfah did not survive, while Haruna and Adamu were treated and later discharged.
Haruna, who had been in a relationship with Zahra’u for two years prior to their marriage, expressed shock over the incident, stating that he believed their love was genuine.
He recounted that while eating the food, they noticed a strange taste and stopped, suspecting it was poisoned. Despite this, they soon began experiencing stomach pains, leading to their hospitalization.
The Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrests of both Zahra’u and Aliyu Muhammad. He stated that the suspects conspired to kill Haruna by poisoning his food, which he shared with his friends. The case is currently under investigation.
This incident has raised concerns about child marriage and its implications in Nigeria. While the Child Rights Act of 2003 prohibits marriage for anyone under 18, Jigawa State’s legislature modified the act, removing the prohibition on child marriage, arguing that determining a girl’s maturity age is subjective.
