Ebonyi Witchcraft Allegations: 17 Suspects Held for Man’s Death
On January 3, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, where a man named Uromchi Okorocha was accused of practicing witchcraft and subsequently burned alive by a mob.
The Nigeria Police Force reported that 17 individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder.
According to the police, the suspects apprehended Okorocha and, instead of handing him over to the authorities, took the law into their own hands, resulting in his death before the police could intervene.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemned the act of jungle justice and urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of reporting suspected criminal activities to the nearest police division.
This incident highlights the dangers of mob justice and underscores the need for public education on the legal processes for handling such accusations.
