Fact Check: Nigerian Army’s Position on POS Operator and Ransom Money Controversy
The Nigerian Army has refuted claims that it illegally detained POS operator Nansak Selbar, who is reportedly in critical health.
Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 3 Division, clarified that Selbar was arrested for facilitating kidnapping activities by receiving ransom payments on behalf of kidnappers.
Investigations revealed his involvement in sourcing military uniforms and equipment for bandits, as well as defrauding individuals under the guise of recruitment into the Nigerian Army.
The Army emphasized that Selbar’s detention was conducted in accordance with the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act (TPPA) 2022, following a court order, and is not illegal.
