Tensions Rise in Kogi: Highway Blocked by Youths Protesting Farmers’ Deaths
On January 4, 2025, youths from the Odo Ape community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State protested the killing of two local farmers by blocking the Lokoja-Kabba federal highway.
The incident occurred when gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, fatally shot a farmer known as Mr. Black, who was transporting his produce to market. Another farmer, Sunday Aiyedero, working nearby, was also killed.
In response, local youths blocked the highway, causing significant traffic disruptions. The situation was eventually brought under control by security operatives and community members.
This attack follows a series of security challenges in the area, including the kidnapping of a newly elected ward councillor and others in recent months. Community leaders are urging government intervention to address the escalating insecurity.
Barrister Zacchaeus Dare, Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government, called for community cooperation with security agencies and emphasized the deployment of military, police, hunters, and local vigilantes to restore peace.
