Speed Darlington’s Lawyer Confirms Court Mandate for Akpi’s Immediate Release
The Federal High Court in Abuja has once again ordered the immediate release of Nigerian artist Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, who has been detained by the police over a defamation lawsuit filed by fellow musician Burna Boy.
Justice Musa Liman issued the latest directive on January 6, 2025, emphasizing that the Inspector-General of Police must comply with the court’s order. This follows a previous order from December 2024, which was disregarded by the authorities.
Despite these clear judicial mandates, reports indicate that the police have delayed Speed Darlington’s release, raising concerns about adherence to the rule of law.
Speed Darlington’s legal team, led by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, has been actively advocating for his release, highlighting the unlawful nature of his prolonged detention.
The court has also instructed a member of Darlington’s legal team, Abubakar Marshal, to stand as surety for him, facilitating his release pending the hearing of the substantive case.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s legal system, particularly regarding the enforcement of court orders and the protection of individual rights.
As of now, Speed Darlington remains in custody, and his legal team continues to press for his immediate release in compliance with the court’s directives.
