Justice for Ibadan Stampede Victims: Governor Makinde Demands Trial for Suspects (Video)
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that individuals responsible for the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, face trial, irrespective of their social status. The incident, which occurred on December 18, 2024, during a Christmas funfair, resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
During the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers held at the secretariat in Ibadan, Governor Makinde addressed calls for leniency, emphasizing that the rule of law must prevail in Oyo State. He stated, “Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail.”
The governor’s remarks come amid reports that some individuals have questioned why Oyo State should pursue justice when similar incidents in other regions did not lead to prosecutions. Makinde clarified that while he has no objection to courts granting bail to the suspects, the judicial process must take its full course to ensure accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
Among those arrested in connection with the incident is Olori Naomi Silekunola, a prominent figure and former queen, who was one of the event’s organizers. Despite her status, Governor Makinde insisted that all suspects must face trial, underscoring his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law without fear or favor.
