South Korea’s Political Turmoil: Investigators Issue New Warrant for President Yoon’s Arrest
South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has obtained a renewed arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, aiming to detain him on insurrection charges linked to his December 3 martial law declaration.
Previous attempts to execute the arrest warrant were thwarted by the Presidential Security Service (PSS), which physically blocked investigators from accessing Yoon’s residence in Seoul’s Hannam-dong district.
The renewed warrant’s validity period remains undisclosed. The CIO and police are considering all options, including deploying SWAT teams, to enforce the detention. Yoon’s legal team argues that detaining him at his residence is unlawful and has filed multiple complaints against officers involved in the detention attempt.
The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to remove or reinstate Yoon following his impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14. In the interim, Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok and PSS members are under scrutiny for potentially obstructing the arrest efforts.
Yoon remains confined to his official residence, which has become a focal point for both supporters and opponents, leading to heightened tensions and clashes.
