Heartbreaking Event: Young Tourist Loses Life to Elephant Attack in Thailand, Witnessed by Boyfriend
On January 3, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at Koh Yao Elephant Care on Yao Yai Island, Thailand, where 22-year-old Spanish tourist Blanca Ojanguren García was fatally injured by a 50-year-old elephant while bathing the animal.
The elephant struck García with its trunk, leading to her death at a local hospital. Her boyfriend and other tourists present at the sanctuary were unharmed.
García, a law and international relations student at the University of Navarra, had recently completed internships at Spain’s navy headquarters.
The incident has prompted Koh Yao Elephant Care to temporarily close, and various Spanish authorities and universities have expressed condolences.
This event underscores the potential dangers associated with human-elephant interactions in tourism settings.
