The Remarkable Shift: Anambra Priest Quits Catholic Church for Indigenous Beliefs
Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu, a former Catholic priest from Anambra State, has resigned from the priesthood after 17 years to embrace African Traditional Religion. He now serves as a lecturer in the Religion and Human Relations Department at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Dr. Obiagbaosogu’s decision was influenced by his fascination with traditional African spirituality, particularly the art of rainmaking. He recently defended his PhD dissertation titled “Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine,” reflecting his deep interest in indigenous practices.
He explained that his upbringing played a significant role in this transition, having been exposed to both Christian and traditional beliefs through his family. This background fostered his appreciation for nature and spirituality, leading him to explore and eventually embrace the traditions of his ancestors.
Dr. Obiagbaosogu emphasized that his journey is about rediscovering and preserving African values that have been eroded over time. He stated, “I have come to realise that my true calling is to serve my people through the ancient traditions of our ancestors.”
