Lakurawa Terrorists Strike: Telecom Workers Among Four Killed in Kebbi
Suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have killed three employees of Airtel Communications Nigeria Ltd and one local resident in Gumki village, Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack occurred on January 10, 2025, around 8:47 PM, while the victims were installing a surveillance mast for the Nigeria Immigration Service. The assailants ambushed the construction site, fatally shooting the three telecom workers and the local resident.
Upon receiving reports of the attack, Kebbi State Police Commissioner Bello Sani and the state’s Comptroller of Immigration, Muhammad Lawali, visited the scene. They oversaw the evacuation of the bodies to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.
Commissioner Sani also reviewed the area’s security strategy and deployed additional tactical teams to counter the activities of bandits in the region.
This incident follows a similar attack by the Lakurawa group in the same area a week earlier, during which two police officers were killed.
The Lakurawa group, reportedly affiliated with extremist organizations operating in the Sahel region, has been active in northern Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Initially founded as a self-defense group to combat banditry, Lakurawa has become increasingly radical and oppressive over time, imposing strict religious laws and engaging in violent activities.
