FCTA’s Bold Legal Action: Attempted Murder Charges for Infrastructure Vandals
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced that individuals apprehended for vandalizing public infrastructure will now face charges of economic sabotage and, in severe cases, attempted murder or murder.
This decision was made during the first Security Council meeting of 2025, chaired by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, emphasized that previous penalties, such as minimal fines or corporal punishment, have been insufficient deterrents.
He highlighted the dangers posed by such vandalism, including the removal of manhole covers, which can lead to fatal accidents for unsuspecting residents.
In addition to these measures, the FCTA has imposed a two-week suspension on the operations of scrap metal dealers, locally known as ‘Pantekas’, to allow for proper profiling and ensure only legitimate businesses operate. Scavenging activities have also been restricted to designated dump sites outside the city center and residential areas.
These actions reflect the FCTA’s commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
