Kano Faces Bird Flu Threat: FG Confirms Outbreaks and Control Plans
The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in Kano State.
The outbreak has affected various bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowl, and turkeys.
The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kano State chapter, has also acknowledged the outbreak. Dr. Usman Gwarzo, the chairman of PAN Kano, recounted an incident where a secondary school student from Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Local Government Area purchased a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA.
After introducing the duck to his existing flock, the birds began dying, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of avian influenza at the Gwale veterinary clinic. Samples sent for confirmation tested positive for avian influenza in the first week of January 2025. Dr. Gwarzo noted that no similar reports have emerged from other poultry farms in the area.
This development raises concerns about the potential spread of the virus to other regions and the implications for public health and the poultry industry.
