Tanzanian Activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai Safe: Details of Her Alleged Kidnap in Kenya
Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai was abducted in Nairobi on January 12, 2025, by three armed men in a black vehicle. She was released hours later, and her husband, David Tsehai, accused Tanzania’s national intelligence agency, TISS, of orchestrating the abduction.
Sarungi Tsehai, a vocal critic of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been an advocate for change in Tanzania, promoting education for young women and opposing discrimination.
This incident highlights concerns about transnational repression, with rights groups alleging that Tanzanian authorities target critics abroad.
Amnesty International researcher Roland Ebole described the abduction as part of a pattern of “transnational repression” occurring on Kenyan soil, a charge that Kenyan authorities deny.
