Legal Proceedings Unfold: Oyo State Files Murder Charges Against Ooni’s Ex-Wife and Associates Over Ibadan Tragedy
The Oyo State Government has filed an 18-count criminal charge against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, along with radio proprietor Oriyomi Hamzat and Islamic High School Principal Abdulahi Fasasi.
These charges stem from a tragic stampede at a children’s funfair event in Ibadan on December 18, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of over 35 children.
The charges include conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, and criminal negligence. The prosecution alleges that the defendants failed to provide adequate security, crowd control mechanisms, and medical facilities during the event, leading to the fatal stampede.
The offences are cited under Sections 308 and 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The tragic incident occurred during a children’s funfair organized by the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan.
The event was intended to host up to 5,000 young people, offering scholarships and prizes. However, the venue became overcrowded, leading to a stampede that claimed the lives of several children.
In response to the incident, the Oyo State Police Command arrested the ex-queen, the school principal, and six others in connection with the tragedy. The state government has expressed its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and holding those responsible accountable.
