Deadly Terrorist Assault Claims Lives of 40 Farmers in Borno
On January 10, 2025, terrorists attacked farmers in Borno State, Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of 40 individuals. The assailants, suspected to be members of Boko Haram, targeted the farmers while they were working in their fields near the village of Zabarmari, located in the Jere Local Government Area. This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region, where insurgent groups continue to pose significant threats to civilian populations.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from both national and international communities. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism in the country. He stated, “The killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists is an act of cowardice and wickedness. We will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
In response to the attack, the Nigerian military has intensified operations in the area to apprehend the attackers and prevent further incidents. Security analysts have called for enhanced intelligence gathering and community engagement to effectively address the insurgency in the region.
The United Nations has also condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for increased protection of civilians in conflict-affected areas. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “I am appalled by the reports of the brutal attack on civilians in Borno State. Such acts of violence are unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
This tragic event highlights the persistent insecurity in northeastern Nigeria, where farmers often face threats from insurgent groups. The attack not only results in the loss of lives but also exacerbates food insecurity in the region, as fear of violence deters agricultural activities.
