Los Angeles Wildfires: Death Toll Rises and Strong Winds Expected
As of January 13, 2025, the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have claimed at least 24 lives, with 16 individuals still missing. The fires have destroyed thousands of homes, leaving over 150,000 residents evacuated.
Firefighters have managed to slow the fires’ explosive growth over the weekend due to calmer weather but are preparing for more fierce winds forecasted to hit.
The fires have spread over 35,000 acres, destroying 12,000 buildings, with losses estimated at $250 billion. The worst blaze, in Pacific Palisades, has razed over 5,300 buildings.
Firefighters are bracing for “explosive fire growth” due to dangerous 50 to 65 mph winds, threatening affluent areas like Brentwood and the San Fernando Valley.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings about worsening conditions, with life-threatening winds and dangerously low humidity forecasted for much of Southern California.
