Political Turmoil: Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Faces Impeachment Backed by APC Leader
Mudashiru Obasa, who served as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from June 2015 until his impeachment on January 13, 2025, was removed from office following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), supported Obasa’s impeachment, stating that Obasa had begun to perceive himself as an emperor, exhibiting recalcitrant behavior. Oki noted that President Bola Tinubu had intervened in the Assembly’s crisis, but Obasa’s defiance contributed to his eventual removal.
Similarly, Joe Igbokwe, another APC chieftain, endorsed the impeachment, criticizing Obasa for exerting undue pressure on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the years.
Obasa’s tenure was marred by multiple allegations of financial impropriety. In 2020, reports surfaced accusing him of misappropriating public funds, including approving substantial sums for personal expenses. Although he denied these allegations, they persisted throughout his time in office.
Following his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to hold the position in Lagos State. She has pledged to prioritize transparency and accountability in the Assembly’s proceedings.
