NBS Digital Resilience: Website Restoration Post-Hack Success
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has successfully restored its official website after a cyberattack rendered it inaccessible for approximately four weeks. The breach occurred on December 18, 2024, shortly after the NBS released a report indicating that Nigerians paid an estimated ₦2.23 trillion in ransom over a 12-month period.
During the downtime, the NBS utilized its official social media channels to disseminate essential data and updates. The website’s restoration coincides with the scheduled release of the December inflation report, ensuring that stakeholders can access critical economic indicators without further delay.
The prolonged inaccessibility of the NBS website had raised concerns among policymakers, analysts, and investors who rely on the bureau’s data for informed decision-making.
In response to the cyberattack, the NBS has earmarked ₦35 million in its 2025 budget proposal for capacity building in cybersecurity and data center management, aiming to bolster its defenses against future threats.
