North East and North West Under Siege: The Role of Foreign Terrorists in Recent Attacks
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has attributed the recent surge in terrorist activities in the North East and North West regions to an influx of foreign insurgents reinforcing local terror groups.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted that these foreign elements are bolstering groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), intensifying attacks on military bases and civilian populations.
In response, the Nigerian military has intensified operations, resulting in the elimination of 76 militants in Borno State over recent weeks.
Despite these efforts, challenges persist, including incidents of civilian casualties during military operations.
The DHQ emphasizes the need for regional cooperation to address the cross-border nature of these threats and to effectively combat the influence of foreign insurgents in Nigeria.
