Senator Walks Out Amid IGP Egbetokun’s 2025 Budget Presentation: What Happened?
On January 16, 2025, tensions escalated during the Nigeria Police Force’s 2025 budget defense session in the National Assembly. The disagreement began when two lawmakers raised concerns that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun’s presentation did not align with the documents they had received.
The committee chairman’s attempt to allow the IGP to continue while the issue was resolved met strong resistance, leading to a heated shouting session. This dispute prompted Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi from Ebonyi North to storm out of the Joint Committee exercise. His departure was met with jeers from some House of Representatives members.
During his presentation, IGP Egbetokun highlighted the police force’s financial challenges and advocated for its removal from the restrictive envelope budget system. He revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved an increase in the annual police recruitment quota from 10,000 to 30,000, a move he said would significantly enhance the force’s performance.
