Brutal Co-Wife Murder in Niger: Sisters Face Capital Punishment
In a recent ruling by the Niger State High Court, two sisters, Amina Aliyu and Aishat Mohammed Aliyu, have been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Hafsat Aliyu, who was Amina’s co-wife.
The incident occurred in March 2021 in Minna, where the sisters attacked Hafsat, with Amina striking her with a pestle before setting her body ablaze in the kitchen of their residence.
A third sibling, Zainab, who was a minor at the time of the crime, received a life imprisonment sentence due to her age.
The trial, which lasted three years, included testimonies from four witnesses, among them the victim’s husband, Alhaji Muhammad Sani, who provided a detailed account of the events leading to his wife’s death.
This case highlights the severe legal consequences of such violent acts in Nigeria, where the death penalty remains a legal punishment for crimes like murder.
The verdict serves as a stern warning against taking the law into one’s own hands and underscores the importance of resolving domestic disputes through lawful and non-violent means.
