Surviving the Unsurvivable: Corps Member Details Kidnapping Horror
Miss Abasifreke Joseph, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), endured a harrowing five-day ordeal in captivity without food or water after being kidnapped on January 9, 2025, along the Enugu-Ezike Road in Igbo Eze North Local Government Area.
Incident Details:
- Abduction: Joseph was returning to her NYSC posting in Kogi State after a medical leave when the incident occurred. Despite warnings of an armed robbery ahead, the bus driver continued the journey until they encountered the kidnappers. Notably, the driver was allowed to leave unharmed, raising suspicions about his involvement.
- Captivity: During her time in the kidnappers’ den, Joseph and other hostages were subjected to torture and deprived of basic necessities. She recounted, “I spent five days and five nights at the kidnappers’ den without water and food.”
- Release: Joseph was released on January 13, 2025. Following her release, Mr. Sam Pepple, the NYSC Coordinator in Akwa Ibom, visited her and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its members.
