False Narrative Rejected by EFCC After Tragic Loss of Officer
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed profound grief over the death of Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was fatally shot during a lawful operation in Awka, Anambra State, on January 17, 2025.
The incident occurred when EFCC operatives attempted to apprehend Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, a suspected internet fraudster. Despite the officers identifying themselves, Ikechukwu allegedly opened fire, resulting in Salisu’s death.
Following the incident, various narratives emerged on social media, some criticizing the EFCC’s operational methods and questioning the legitimacy of the raid. In response, the EFCC condemned these accounts, describing them as “irresponsible, callous, inhuman and outrageous.” The commission emphasized that there is no justification for the killing of an officer performing official duties and urged the public to refrain from spreading false information.
The EFCC has vowed to ensure that the perpetrator faces justice, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of its personnel. The commission also called on citizens to support law enforcement agencies in their efforts to combat financial crimes and to avoid disseminating unverified information that could undermine such efforts.
