Reframing Narratives: Taiwo Oyedele Suggests Positive Declaration for Nigeria
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, has criticized the expression “May Nigeria not happen to you,” suggesting it reflects a negative outlook on the nation’s prospects. He proposed an alternative: “May Nigeria work for me,” encouraging a more optimistic perspective.
During a recent event organized by Covenant Nation, Oyedele emphasized that the country is overcoming economic challenges, particularly following President Bola Tinubu’s reforms that have increased the cost of living. He stated, “There is nothing wrong with Nigeria. But maybe there is something wrong with the people ruling Nigeria.”
He further defended the government’s decision to remove subsidies, describing it as the best choice for the nation’s long-term growth. He noted that previous economic conditions, such as a devalued exchange rate and artificially low petrol prices, were unsustainable.
Oyedele’s call for a positive outlook aligns with his broader efforts to implement tax reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s fiscal health. He has indicated that tax reform bills are expected to pass by the first quarter of 2025, with implementation beginning on July 1.
