Bolaji Akinyemi Warns President Tinubu: Steering Clear of a Trump Dispute
Former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has advised President Bola Tinubu to avoid confrontations with the newly inaugurated U.S. President, Donald Trump.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Akinyemi emphasized the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship with the U.S. to safeguard Nigeria’s interests.
Akinyemi likened President Trump to a bully who targets those unable to resist effectively. He cautioned that engaging in direct confrontation could lead to adverse outcomes for Nigeria.
Instead, he suggested that President Tinubu employ diplomatic strategies to address any actions by the U.S. that might negatively impact Nigeria, thereby avoiding unnecessary conflicts.
Reflecting on President Trump’s inaugural speech, Akinyemi described it as “shocking and depressing,” noting that it signaled potential challenges ahead due to proposed policies such as tariff increases. He warned that the global community might face a tumultuous period during Trump’s presidency.
