Over 5,000 Nigerian Women Stranded in Iraq: A NiDCOM Report

NiDCOM Reveals Crisis: Thousands of Nigerian Women Trapped in Iraq

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has reported that over 5,000 Nigerian women are currently stranded in Iraq. These women were reportedly lured with promises of employment as caregivers but have found themselves in distressing situations upon arrival.

NiDCOM’s Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, highlighted a tragic case where a husband sent his wife to Iraq for caregiving work, only for her to die under mysterious circumstances. The Nigerian Mission is now assisting in repatriating her remains.

This situation underscores the dangers of irregular migration and the deceptive practices of human traffickers. Many of these women face severe abuse and exploitation, akin to modern slavery.

NiDCOM is actively working to address the plight of these stranded women and is urging Nigerians to be cautious of dubious job offers abroad. The commission emphasizes the importance of seeking legitimate opportunities and being aware of the risks associated with irregular migration.
