Niger State’s Desperation: Another Oil Tanker Leak Amidst Recent Explosion Tragedy
In Niger State, Nigeria, residents have been observed collecting oil from overturned tankers, despite the recent tragic explosion that claimed 98 lives. On January 20, 2025, a fuel tanker overturned near the Suleja area, leading to an explosion that resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.
Just two days later, on January 22, 2025, another tanker carrying groundnut oil overturned near the AYM Shafa filling station in Bida town. Witnesses reported that residents gathered to collect the spilled oil, with some even stealing large quantities.
These incidents highlight a recurring pattern in the region, where individuals attempt to collect fuel or oil from overturned tankers, often leading to explosions and fatalities. The high cost of fuel, exacerbated by the removal of subsidies, has intensified this dangerous behavior.
Authorities continue to warn against such actions, emphasizing the severe risks involved. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that the death toll from the January 20 explosion has risen to 98, with 55 individuals injured.
