Patient Death Triggers Staff Termination at UCTH: An In-Depth Look
The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has terminated the employment of a locum radiographer due to negligence leading to a patient’s death.
The incident occurred when a critically ill patient was brought to the hospital and required an emergency chest X-ray. The radiographer on duty was unable to locate the key to the emergency X-ray room, resulting in significant delays. After several hours, the patient lapsed into a coma and subsequently passed away.
Following the incident, UCTH management issued a termination letter to the radiographer, effective immediately. The letter, signed by Dr. Maria Bassey, the hospital’s Director of Administration, stated: “This is to inform you that your services in the UCTH as a radiographer are no longer required. Consequently, your appointment is hereby terminated with immediate effect.”
