Maduka Okoye Dropped by Udinese: Key Details on the Betting Scandal Probe
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is under investigation for alleged involvement in a betting scandal. The probe centers on a yellow card he received during Udinese’s 2-1 victory over Lazio on March 11, 2024. Betting agency Sisal detected unusual gambling activities linked to this incident, prompting investigators to search Okoye’s residence.
In response, Udinese has removed Okoye from their registered players list, replacing him with newly signed goalkeeper Egil Selvik. While Okoye is currently sidelined due to a wrist injury, the club has not officially stated whether his exclusion is related to the ongoing investigation.
If found guilty, Okoye could face a ban of up to five years from all competitions, as he is accused of deliberately influencing an event in which he participated.
The investigation also involves Diego Giordano, a pizzeria owner whose establishment is frequented by footballers, suggesting a broader scope to the inquiry.
Okoye’s legal representatives have dismissed the allegations as baseless, and the investigation is ongoing.
