Jigawa’s N5 Billion Financial Setback: A Closer Look at Protest Consequences
The Jigawa State Government has reported that properties worth an estimated ₦5 billion were destroyed during the nationwide “End Bad Governance” protests in August 2024.
A fact-finding committee, established to assess the damages, revealed that the destruction encompassed both public and private assets, including government buildings, vehicles, and businesses.
The “End Bad Governance” protests, which occurred from August 1 to August 10, 2024, were a series of decentralized mass demonstrations across Nigeria, triggered by rising economic hardships and perceived governmental inefficiencies. The protests escalated when security agencies attempted to disperse demonstrators, leading to violence and significant property damage in various states, including Jigawa.
In response to the reported losses, the Jigawa State Government has called for peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement to address citizens’ grievances, emphasizing the detrimental impact of violence on societal development.
