Kogi School Attack: Secondary Student Assaults Teacher into Coma
In a concerning incident at Ebira Muslim Community College Okengwe (EMCCO) in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, a group of Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2) students allegedly assaulted their Physics teacher, Mr. Muktar Salihu, leading to him falling into a coma.
The students reportedly disguised themselves as a cult group to carry out the attack. The leader of the group, identified as Abdulbatin, is said to be the son of a local traditional ruler. Mr. Salihu is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The school’s staff have called on relevant authorities, including the State Ministry of Education and security agencies, to take action to prevent future occurrences and maintain discipline in schools. The local District Police Officer has intervened, instructing the traditional ruler to present his son for questioning.
This incident highlights a troubling trend of violence in Nigerian schools. For instance, in July 2023, a teacher in Ogun State was assaulted by students after preventing one from cheating during an examination.
Similarly, in May 2024, an eight-year-old pupil in Anambra State was beaten into a coma by a teacher, leading to the child’s death.
