Amendment Proposal by GOP Could Open Doors for Trump’s Third Term
On January 23, 2025, Representative Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a resolution proposing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would permit former President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office.
The proposed amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to an additional term after having been elected to two consecutive terms.”
This proposal specifically aims to allow Trump, who served non-consecutive terms, to run again, while excluding other living former presidents—such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush—from seeking another term, as they each served two consecutive terms. Ogles argues that Trump’s leadership is essential for reversing the nation’s decline and restoring its greatness.
Amending the Constitution is a rigorous process, requiring approval by a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, followed by ratification from three-fourths of state legislatures. Given the current political landscape, the feasibility of this amendment passing is highly uncertain.
