Bill Gates Opens Up: Divorce Regret with Melinda
Bill Gates has recently expressed that his divorce from Melinda French Gates is the “mistake” he most regrets. In an interview, he described the experience as “miserable” for both of them over a two-year period. Despite the challenges, Gates mentioned that he feels “more cheerful now.”
The couple announced their separation in May 2021, ending their 27-year marriage. They have three children together: Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe. Following the divorce, Melinda departed from their joint philanthropic venture, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in 2024.
Reports suggest that factors contributing to their separation included Gates’s association with Jeffrey Epstein, which Melinda disapproved of. Despite these challenges, both have moved on and are currently in new relationships.
Gates acknowledged the difficulty of balancing work and family life, noting that he had hoped for a marriage as enduring as his parents’, who were married for 45 years.
He emphasized that, despite the divorce, he and Melinda continue to see each other at family events and remain proud of their shared legacy, including their children and grandchildren.
