Sowore Summoned: Key Highlights from His Arrival at Police HQ
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, arrived at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, January 27, 2025, in response to a police summons. The invitation, dated January 23, 2025, was issued by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and signed by Commissioner of Police Ibitoye Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
The letter indicated that Sowore is under investigation for several offenses, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, acts intended to cause grievous harm or prevent arrest, compelling action by intimidation, reckless and negligent acts, refusal to assist public servants, and cyberstalking.
Sowore’s summons follows his dissemination of a viral video alleging extortion by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos. He arrived at the FID Complex, located opposite the Force Headquarters in Abuja, at approximately 9:58 a.m., accompanied by his legal representatives and supporters.
After his arrival, Sowore was granted administrative bail with conditions requiring him to deposit his international passport and provide a guarantor who is a Level 17 civil servant. He rejected these conditions, opting to remain in police custody until he is formally charged in court.
In a statement on his social media platform, Sowore emphasized his refusal to accept what he termed “unreasonable” bail conditions and expressed his willingness to stay in detention pending legal proceedings.
