Why Sowore Chooses Custody Over Controversial Police Bail
Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declined the bail conditions set by the Nigeria Police Force, choosing instead to remain in custody until he is formally charged in court.
The bail terms required Sowore to surrender his international passport and provide a surety who is a Level 17 civil servant, equivalent to a permanent secretary. Sowore deemed these conditions unreasonable and stated that he would prefer to stay in detention rather than compromise his principles.
Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana SAN, responded to the police’s request, expressing concerns over the stringent bail conditions. Despite a reduction in the surety requirement from Level 17 to Level 16, Sowore maintained his stance, emphasizing his commitment to his dignity and integrity.
This development follows Sowore’s invitation for questioning by the police over a viral video he recorded. He has been a prominent figure in Nigerian activism, known for his outspoken criticism of government practices and his role in organizing protests.
