Trump Implements 25% Emergency Tariffs Amid Colombia Visa Block

US-Colombia Tensions Rise: Trump Blocks Visas, Raises Tariffs

On January 26, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on all Colombian imports and implemented visa restrictions for Colombian officials. This action was in response to Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s refusal to allow two U.S. military planes carrying deported migrants to land in Colombia.

The situation escalated rapidly, with President Trump threatening to increase the tariffs to 50% within a week if Colombia did not comply. In retaliation, Colombia imposed its own tariffs on U.S. goods.

However, the dispute was short-lived. Colombia agreed to accept the deported migrants, leading the U.S. to suspend the imposed tariffs and sanctions. The White House confirmed that Colombia would accept all deported migrants from the U.S. without limitations or delays, including those on U.S. military aircraft.
